SPUN SPINNING
AND THE SEARCH CONTINUES…
Sympathy this morning to all those who were sure HARD SPUN was THE Derby horse this year but, ah, he’s a mere mortal. A wide trip started his journey and he never looked happy – can you say ‘need to lead’?
No Derby winners in the Southwest S. field yesterday I’m afraid. Although my 2 win bets on Forty Grams and Teuflesberg (trained by one-time Woodbine jockey Jamie Sanders) worked out well!!
MESSY, MESSY MESSY
The standardbred biz is both in an ugly mess in Ontario but also in the midst of an overhaul. Tons of kudos to Woodbine and the Ontario Racing Commission who are heck-bent to eliminate ‘cheaters’ who use illegal drugs on their harness horses. Tiny fields were the result on the weekend at Woodbine when 3 trainers were not allowed to race horses that they had entered. Kind of like a baseball or hockey strike, this stuff is going to keep people well clear of this sport until confidence is restored. At least the local industry folks are working very hard to do just that.
Now, it’s time to work on the thoroughbred set….

Toronto owner MIKE COLL won the 6th race at Gulfstream yesterday with WINNING APPEAL, a Florida-bred 3yo filly who won her maiden for $16,000 claiming in her 4th start of the season. The fill is trained by Nick Gonzalez, whose 2 other starters yesterday were not as successful. Canadian champion 2yo in 2004, WHOLELOTTABOURBON, stopped after showing speed in the day’s 3rd race and was beaten 10 lengths in his first claiming start. In that race, British Columbia-bred SEEKING THE CARAT was vanned off after his 3rd place finish.
JUDITH’S WILD RUSH was a flat 6th in the General George at Laurel behind star sprinter SILVER WAGON. Judith was beaten 8 ¼ lengths and ran a 91 Beyer Figure…SEASIDE RETREAT fizzled in his 2007 season debut in the 7th race on turf, beaten about 6 lengths…If you get excited by really tiny fields then you would have liked Santa Anita yesterday which had lots of 4 and 5 horse events. Canadian-bred Telepathic was scratched from his scheduled debut while Town Thief was a distant 3rd in a 4 horse field in an allowance event…
I’M WORKIN..YES INDEED
TWILIGHT METEOR, a Queen’s Plate eligible for trainer Todd Pletcher and the Fort family’s Peachtree Stables, had a quick 5 furlong spin at Palm Meadows yesterday – 1:01.
MOUNTAIN WOLF could be yet another Adena Springs owned or bred Plate contender if he progresses 2nd time out in the MSW tomorrow at GP. The Can.bred is by El Prado (who else?) and is making his 2nd career start.
IS CAT GOOD TO GO? Don Danard’s first-time starter, CATS GOOD TO GO is scheduled to debut at Fair Grounds on Friday in the day’s final tilt, a 5 ½ furlong maiden special weight. In the care currently of Malcolm Pierce, the colt was trained at Woodbine last year by Renee Kierans. He’s 12 to 1 in the morning line and has Emma-Jayne Wilson on board. The colt is by Cat’s At Home and was bred by Bernard and Karen McCormack. Wilson also rides SEAMANS VILLAGE, a Plate nominee, in a grass race earlier on the card for owner Eugene Melnyk.

Hello Jenn,
I have been checking daily for some comments on some of the media that has been surrounding Woodbine of late. With the news of Rui Pimentel, David Clarke going to trial this month and all the positive tests this past three weeks....ouch!
What's your take?
