WALE POSTING

72nd Prince of Wales

Five 3-year-old colts are expected to be entered in the Prince of Wales Stakes today, the draw is at 3 p.m. at FORT ERIE, where the 1 3/16 mile race will take place on that track's dirt course.
Bill Tallon of the Daily Racing Form here in Toronto reported in the paper that JIGGS COZ 'popped a curb' after the Queen's Plate, in which he was a disappointing 3rd behind Mike Fox.
(Read more at www.drf.com in the Woodbine track news section)

Last year's Prince of Wales was a memorable one, in fact the result wasn't really official until about 2 months ago when an appeal into the disqualification of MALAKOFF (whatever happened to him?) was denied. The Stronach Stables colt wiped out Shillelagh Slew and others in deep stretch on his way to a 1 1/2 length win. Shillelagh Slew was placed first while Plate winner Edenwold was a troubled 5th and placed 4th.

Two years ago, ABLO won a 6-horse 'Wales while Plate winner Wild Desert was marooned in 3rd.

2004 - 'Goldie', A BIT O' GOLD, beat Plate winner Niigon in deep stretch to win the Wales, which had a field of 7. His Beyer Figure was 100.

2003- Wando, the last Triple Crown winner, romped in the Wales over a slick surface over 6 rivals with a 99 Beyer Figure.
2002 - Le Cinquieme Essai won a 12 horse Waleswith T J's Lucky Moon in 10th.
2001 - Win City got his revenge on Dancethruthedawn in a 6-horse Wales.

Prospective field for Sunday's Prince of Wales:

ALEZZANDRO Todd Kabel - remember Knob Hill Stable's Prince of Wales win in 1992? Benburb stunned Alydeed!

MIKE FOX Emma-Jayne Wilson- Gave it everything he had in the Plate, does he need a race or 2 to come back to that form?

MARCHFIELD Pat Husbands - Hard to figure this guy, but not much pace to run at over a speed favouring track on Plate day didn't help.

DAAHER Mike Luzzi - American shipper was racing for just the 3rd time in the Plate and wallowed on the rail in his Polytrack debut.

JIGGS COZ David Clark - Reportedly had a minor problem after Plate, was so dominant in the spring, he could come back.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT WOODBINE

The Toronto Thoroughbred Racing Club meets tonight at Woodbine at 7:30 for its monthly meeting and discussion about the Prince of Wales Stakes on Sunday.

The 8-race card tonight is a light one with only two non-claming races – an Ontario-siured allowance race at 6 ½ furlongs which is race 1 and a 5-horse field and a maiden allowance for fillies and mares that goes as race 6.

Ralph Biamonte’s homebred Bold n’ Flashy gelding NAKED NUES should be favoured to win his first race of the year after two seconds and two thirds from his 5 outings in 2007.

An interesting turf race kicks off the Pick 4 tonight (race 4) with several longshot possibilities.

Trainer WRAY LAWRENCE won a nice race on the turf with A Franky on June 29 and tries tonight with AIR FARCE, a Distorted Humor gelding who has raced twice on turf already with no luck. The gelding’s first turf try came before he added Lasix and the second turf try was at 1 3/8 miles which was likely too far.

Air Farce is in good form and he drops from a non-winners of 3 race to a non-winners of 2. Patrick Husbands rides him for the first time.

17YO TODAY AT ELLIS PARK

ALPENA MAGIC, by Canadian champion L’Enjoleur, is expected to start as a 17yo today in the 3rd race at Ellis Park. He has not won in 19 previous races.

Only 2 other horses won races as 17yo’s since 1976.

Alpena Magic began his career in 1992 and he’s won 16 of 154 starts.

CANADIAN-BRED WINNERS STATE-SIDE

GREGSON, a stakes placed son of Cherokee Run – Early Blaze, won an allowance race in gate to wire fashion yesterday at Delaware Park. It was his 6th win in 25 starts.

The gelding is owned by Robert Cole and trained by Scott Lake.

His time for 6 furlongs was 1:09 4/5, a 91 Beyer Figure. He has two wins, a 2nd and a 3rd since being claimed for $35,000 by Cole and Lake.

DESPERADO KID won for the 3rd consecutive time at Philly Park on July 9. The Bianconi-Tripp Trial, by Trippi 6yo gelding ran 5 furlongs in 56 4/5 in a starter allowance with an 81 Beyer Figure. He has earned Beyer Figures over 80 in his last 4 starts. The Kid was bred by Lucille Wakefield in Ontario. He’s won 7 of 23 starts.

LE WILDCAT, a Manitoba bred by Forest Wildcat from Zambia by Theatrical, won a maiden race at Mountaineer Park on July 8.

Doug Anderson,Alistair Roden, Stonyfield Farm and Rita Eskudt bred the chestnut filly. She earned a 48 Beyer Figure.

OOPS! TRUCK CRASHES INTO WEGZ

(from Standardbred Canada)

Yesterday afternoon, a truck crashed into the plate glass windows of the WEGZ Stadium Bar in Vaughan, Ont.

Traffic was re-routed around the area, and the driver only suffered minor injuries.

Details about how the accident occurred remain unclear at this point, but the traffic unit has launched an investigation, according to a story on yorkregion.com.

The sports bar, which is owned and operated by the Woodbine Entertainment Group, has posted on its website that it will not be open tonight.

However, WEG's Scott Glover confirmed with Trot Insider today that the off-track wagering venue will open tomorrow with structural clearance by the Vaughan Building Department.

With reference to yesterdays comment about "Mike Fox" & the sauna, please note that in winning his 1st race at WO, "Mike Fox" looked exactly as you describe. For this horse, looking washy is not an impediment. Hope you go overboard on others, as odds will be that much better on "Mike".

first off, great site jen for haveing a canadian content blog for us. In reading your site daily i hear and see alot of talk in regards to promoting racing in canada. Well, I watched the score broadcast tonight and saw the interview with Julia Carey's. Im sure shes a nice lady and all but lets be serious. Sandy asked her how she saw her race going and she said" i dont really know i just hope i cross the line first"

In a business where all trainers are self employed and self promoters, how encuraging would that statement be to a new person watching for the first time and seeing that the trainer has no opinion. Even for myself who is a part owner in a cheap claimer i wonder does she even look or consider who the compition is?

I just think that it came across as i dont know i just enter a race and hope for the best. This is not the first interview ive seen that is laughable for the business that we all want to see grow

First off I agree that your "blog" has been a great stimulator of conversation and interest for all in the Thoroughbred industry in Ontario if not all of Canada. For that I thank you.
In defence of Julia Carey and many if not most Trainers, they are not trained or usually expecting to speak publicaly. It can be very intimidating to have a microfone put in front of anyone. Ms Carey has done an exceptional job training horses and I'm sure her conversations with an Owner would be quite differant to than that which the TV audiance heard. Some Trainers are natural "entertainers" and make for great TV but the majority are very private and even selfconcious in nature. This may change as more exposure comes to racing but don't judge their talent as a Trainer but their public speaking ability.

How come we can't bet on the Ellis Park win 4? I read how all bettors should support lower take-out. So I download Ellis Park ready to play the win 4 and when I go to bet it's not available.
