STRIKE AND SOME SOUL

HENDRIE STRIKE

96 Beyer Figure for Sam-Son miss

Just as trainer Robert Tiller probably thought Dave the Knave needed one race before the New Providence Stakes on Saturday, Mark Frostad was of the same thinking with STRIKE SOFTLY in the Hendrie (Gr3) yesterday.

It didn’t matter, however, as Strike Softly flew up the inside to inhale the weakening speedsters and win the $150,000 event by 4 lengths in her season debut.

Her time of 1:16 1/5 translated into a 96 Beyer Figure. That launched her into the HOT CANADIAN -BRED LIST (see at right)

The race featured 3 to 5 shot Mary Delaney , shipping in from 4 consecutive wins on Kentucky Polytracks.

But Mary got cooked in a pace duel with Summer Girlfriend, setting the race up for jockey Todd Kabel who just steered Strike Softly inside of rivals.

Mary Delaney held for second and Harlequin Ranches’ Bosskiri was a brave third.

Whimsical Stakes winner Seductively was a flat 8th (last).

The Sam-Son Farm homebred is by Smart Strike-Wilderness Hush, Wild Again.

Indeed, Frostad pointed out that the filly’s final start of 2006, a win in the Jammed Lovely, was one of the best of her career (her first Polytrack sprint) but she is also quite talented on the grass.

It was the fifth win in 11 starts for the 4-year-old and her earnings are now over $500,000.

SOUL REBEL stamped himself a potential star of the Ontario Sires Stakes program with a win in his season debut yesterday in the Connaught Cup prep.

The race was taken off the grass and run at 1 mile and 70 yards on Polytrack and that suited Soul Rebel (Ascot Knight-Rivermaid Dancing) just fine.

Stalking the pace off the rail down the backstretch, Soul Rebel and jockey Jono Jones (who won 3 races yesterday) found themselves trapped in mid-stretch when Shoal Water drifted in from Powerful Touch through the stretch and closed a hole that Jones was looking for.

So Jones, yanked Soul Rebel out and the horse closed very fast for a 1 length win.

He earned a 92 Beyer Figure. Soul Rebel is owned by his breeder, Richard Day of Kingview Farms and trained by John Charalambous. The Rebel also worked his way onto the Hot Canadian-bred list.

ALEZZANDRO made his career debut a winning one in the last race under Jones. The giant High Yield-Eseni, Granacus colt, considered better than stablemate champion Leonnatus Anteas by trainer Kevin Attard, surged 3 wide to the lead off the turn of the 6 ½ furlong race and held off favoured Payday Peril.

The colt is a Queen’s Plate eligible who is owned and bred by Knob Hill Stable (which has won three races in the last week with Attard). His Beyer Figure was 76.

The meetings first 3-race winner is EFFTEESEE, a continually improving grey gelding by Trajectory who won and non-winners of allowance race for Ontario-sired dudes in race 1. Owned by RMC Stable and trained by Dan Vella, Effteesee is out of the Great Gladiator mare Glace Bay.

The Polytrack surface seems to be playing more fair these days even before the needed work on it has yet to be done (the re-waxing is supposed to be done tomorrow and Wednesday but there is word that could be delayed again).

WOODBINE SCOREBOARD

Three riders jockeying for postion – TYLER PIZARRO, EURICO ROSA DA SILVA and EMILE RAMSAMMY are tied with 15 wins (who would have thought that?) with JUSTIN STEIN at 13 and EMMA JAYNE WILSON at 12.

ROBERT TILLER still leads trainers with 14 – ABRAHAM KATRYAN has 12 and SID ATTARD has 11.

STREET SOUNDS POINTED TO OAKS

The assistant to trainer Michael Matz (Barbaro), Martin Paramo, said STREET SOUNDS is likely headed to Woodbine for the June 10 Woodbine Oaks according to the Washington Post.

The Street Cry filly (sire of Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense) was supplemented to the Oaks for $5,000 by the May 1 deadline. The filly has won the Beaumont and Hilltop Stakes this season – one on Polytrack and one on turf. She is a front running type who beat another Oaks contender, Palace Palace Pier in the Beaumont.

Street Sounds was bred by Anderson Farms and Rod Ferguson in Ontario.

The Plate and Oaks nominees can be viewed on the Woodbine website.

WORKOUT WATCH

Stronach Stables’ Queen’s Plate hopeful HIGH ACT returned to the worktab yesterday with a half-mile in 50 1/5. The El Prado colt has not raced since he was on the edges in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park. He reportedly pulled a muscle recently and will miss the Marine stakes this weekend.

GET READY FOR HOLIDAY (LONG) WEEKEND

Preakness on Saturday, 3 graded stakes at Woodbine

A threepack of big stakes races – all graded – take place this holiday weekend.

Labatt Woodbine Oaks gals tackle American breds in Saturday’s Selene Stakes and projected starters include Calendar Girl (Elusive Quality) who broke her maiden at Gulfstream for $32,000 claiming and just won a Stampede Park sprint race with a 94 Beyer Figure; Dance to My Tune; Quiet Action; Quiet Jungle, Saskawea or Palace Pier and Sprung.

Queen’s Plate hopefuls race in the Marine on Sunday but they figure to be outnumbered by American-breds and Monday’s Eclipse Handicap could pit champion TRUE METROPOLITAN against champions PALLADIO and SHILLELAGH SLEW.

And of course, STREET SENSE, the Kentucky Derby winner, tries for leg two of the Triple Crown at Pimlico and he’ll have about 8 challengers in the 1 3/16 mile race.

BLOG THIS

A blog refresher

A web-log is a personal website, know as a Blog, and there are thousands of them out there.

I began this one in March 2006 and enjoy writing about local racing each morning.
I attempt to update the site each morning before 11 a.m. and sometimes I write in the afternoons during the racing.

On average, currently 200 people view this site each day.

Feel free to send in comments, stories, pictures, opinions etc. – it’s not that hard, just set up an easy login and away you go.

Join in on the poll question – which will change now and then. The current one will be taken down later today and a summary of the results will be posted.

There is also a HOT CANADIAN-BRED, a personal list based on Beyer Figures, class, etc., with all the current hot stars bred in this country.

Check out all the links of other racing Blogs around the continent or other links I have posted. Thank you to Canadian Thoroughbred magazine for its continued support with its ad in the right corner – if you want to help out the Blog, consider an advertisement or simply make a donation.

You can search the Archives or download the cool Photo Café programs developed by my brother Andrew.

Oh yes, I also have my book list of recent titles that I have read recently.

Just a lot of fun and a place for readers to voice their opinions with necessarily putting their name on their comments.

    Hi Jen:

Some good racing and a good crowd on Sunday at Woodbine. I thought that was an impressive winner from the Knob Hill Stable. He was very impressive and a bold statement from the trainer to think he is better than Leonnatus Anteas.
