AMERICAN BREDS SWEEP STAKES
It's not all bad though, as Canadian-bred have been kickin butt all winter south of the border. The 2 stakes at Woodbine this last weekend were sprints and starting points for some on the way to the Canadian Triple Crown - except that each race had very few such runners.
Still tinkering with the HOT CANADIAN-BRED LIST and I welcome any readers who were brow-beated with my website address on the weekend!

A LEGEND IN THE STAR SHOOT
Woodbine Sunday
Bill Sorokolit’s Kentucky-bred 3-year-old filly NATIVE LEGEND remained undefeated with a strong win in the Star Shoot Stakes yesterday at Woodbine at odds-on under jockey Richard Dos Ramos.
A Tale of the Cat miss out of top broodmare Native Rights (2005’s outstanding broodmare in Canada), by Our Native, Native Legend had a rail, chasing trip behind the maniacal speed duel that included one of 2 fillies trained by Nick Gonzalez (Stillisstillmovin). The fractions of 21 1/5 and 44 2/5 softened the speed and allowed Native Legend to pounce for the win.
The filly earned a 79 Beyer Figure, down from her 84 she earned in an allowance win that kicked off her season.
The next stakes race that she could compete in is the SELENE STAKES ON May 20, an open race for 2yo fillies at 1 1/16 miles.
American-breds swept the top four positions in the Star Shoot and the race will likely not have any bearing on the Woodbine Oaks in June.
One filly who is Ontario-bred but currently not an Oaks nominee is BANKER’S STREET (a speedy Banker’s Gold filly out of Elm Street by Ogygian. The filly dueled Second Offense throughout 6 ½ furlongs in an allowance race yesterday and pulled clear, running in 1:16 2/5 and earning a 90 Beyer.
The filly was co-bred by owner Robert Harvey, who is listed as having purchased the filly outright at auction for $10,999 American.
Another sunny and warm spring day left Polytrack loose, fluffy, crumbly, whatever you want to call it, but the times were quick (a strong wins down the backstretch pushed the pacesetters along quickly) and speed and inside continued to rule the results.
Some concern about the track was evident again because of several fatal breakdowns during training on the weekend.
As mentioned yesterday in mid-afternoon, trainer ROBERT TILLER swept the double and his Woodbine Oaks nominee YOLIE (Menifee) ran a 76 Beyer Figure in her maiden score.
BILBO (Point Given) won his maiden in his season debut for trainer LAURIE SILVERA with a front running score in race 8 over an impressive beginner, KUMA (Japanese for ‘Bear’). The time of 1:23 1/5 was an 82 Beyer Figure. Canadian-breds in that race with any Queen’s Plate aspirations were not factors (Ghetto Superstar was one of them).
Some other notes from Woodbine – JAMBALAYA has returned to Canada and is readying for the Connaught Cup on May 27 at 1 1/16 miles on the grass.
Dean Deverell rode a miraculous race on ONE HAPPY CAT (who has fallen down after the wire in 2 races) who seemed to be lugging in so badly while leading in the stretch that he was looking like he would fall down again. Deverell held the gelding’s head up, however, and then pulled him up sharply after the wire.
Owner Bruno Schickedanz, who recently led all owners by wins at Sam Houston, has reportedly donated millionaire, now claimer PAROSE to LONGRUN LIKE THOROUGHBRED RETIREMENT FOUNDATIONS.
LIKE MOM LIKE SONS, the undefeated Carson City colt who won Saturday’s Woodstock Stakes, is reportedly on the verge of being sold. If the colt stays in Canada, his next stakes race he could run in would be the Marine Stakes at 1 1/16 miles next month.
The colt had a serious bout of heat stroke after his win so don’t be betting him back if he doesn’t have several weeks off.
QUEEN’S PLATE CONTENDER MIKE FOX is now trained by Ian Black, who follows Reade Baker and Cliff Hopmans/Hugh Graham has his coach.
WOODBINE SCOREBOARD
Through Sunday, apprentice rider TYLER PIZARRO is tied for leading jockey with EMILE RAMSAMMY with 9 wins apiece. Constants in the top leaders EMMA-JAYNE WILSON and COREY FRASER have 7 each.
ROBERT TILLER has 8 wins on the season already while LAURIE SILVERA has 6 wins.

just out of curiosity, jen...how old was Parose this year? 11? 12?

I am so happy to hear that Parose is going to Long Run. I hope that he will find a good home with someone who loves him as much as his fans have loved to see him run. What a heart he has!
In answer to the prior question, he is 13 this year.
