FRESHMAN SIRE CONTEST ON THOROUGHBLOG

The results are in - at least the way they were calculated by yours truly.

Painstakingly, the points were calculated for each stallion that folks selected (some stallions chosen like Paolini, did not have any available evidence of points) and then each teams points were calculcated.
There is certainly a chance of some minor error - email me if you have a query.
Below are the stallions and then the teams.

This is how it was calculated:

USING - Blood-Horse stallion lists and director AND Thoroughbred Times Stallion online service

Total Winners = 1 point each

REGULAR STAKES WIN - 3
or GRADE 1 - 10
or GRADE 2- 7
or GRADE 3 - 5
ANY STAKES PLACING, (2ND OR 3RD) - another 2 points.

**DISCLAIMER – there would be a 1-2 point give/take ratio based on hands-on calculations…

COMING UP SATURDAY...
Big card at Fair Grounds

The RISEN STAR STAKES for Kentucky Derby hopefuls, is the feature but there is a bunch of stakes races and lots of local interest.

Among the Canadian horses are FRENCH BERET and WINDWARD ISLANDS in the Fair Grounds Handicap. The former is one of the hottest Canadian-breds around right now.
GOOD AND LUCKY, Canadian-owned by Jim and Alice Sapara, is entered in the Mineshaft Handicap (Grade 3).
SHILLA, Ontario bred, is in the Pan Zareta Stakes.

The performance of FRIESAN FIRE, who won the Lecomte, will give us a good read on PATENA, the Canadian-owned fellow who is headed to the Fountain of Youth Stakes and was 2nd in the Lecomte.

ONTARIO BREDS GET MORE MONEY IN 2008

As reported last spring on THOROUGHBLOG, the new Ontario-bred bonus is underway at Woodbine, at all levels.
Last year, Ontario bred horses received an extra 10% in purses in any race and this year it is going up to 15%.
Once a horse is claimed however, the bonus cannot be claimed.

As for definitions... anything born previous to 2008 is a "registered Ontario-bred" but the definition changed last year with respects to the Mare Reisdency Program (see the www.cthsont.com)

SQUARE EDDIE SIZZLES IN 58 4/5

Canadian-bred SQUARE EDDIE, who is on the Kentucky Derby trail but is certainly going to be named the QUEEN'S PLATE WINTERBOOK FAVOURITE next month, worked a rapid 5 furlongs on the Hollywood synthetic dirt yesterday - 58 4/5, the fastest of 39 works at the distance yesterday morning.

Eddie, by SMART STRIKE, was bred by Kinghaven Farms. He is headed to the Southwest Stakes where he will meet a litany of tough grey 3yos including the big shot - OLD FASHIONED.

Speaking of SQUARE EDDIE, he tops BOB SUMMERS' Derby hopefuls list in the BUFFALO NEWS, updated yesterday.

Canadian-owned PATENA/BEAR'S ROCKET are not on the list currently.

Thank you Jen for all of the work involved in running the Freshman Sire Contest! Such an incredible amount of work for you!! I'm hoping to be smarter and luckier in 2009!

Well, I'm disappointed in the trainers who had the progeny of my sires in their barns for not earning me enough points for the win. But I'm just glad that I beat KG.

Thanks Jen, fun contest, I will be in the 09 one for sure.

Also, I've heard people talking about the Fort on other sites and how effective the $1 pop and hot dog promotion has been over the years at keeping that track open. If it does survive, I'm wondering if new or old management will change the name of The Prince of Wales Stakes to the $1 POP AND HOT DOG STAKES, since that is what people go there for. It only seems fair.
