HAWLEY HONOURED LAST NIGHT

The Premier of Ontario DALTON MCGUINTY, through Etobicoke North MPP Sharif Qaadri, surprised champion jockey SANDY HAWLEY last night after the 2nd race and presented the multi-Hall of Famer with a Certificate of Excellence based on his accomplishments on and off the racetrack.

Hawley, who now speaks to dozens of groups each year on behalf of WOODBINE ENTERTAINMENT, is headed to Santa Anita for a Living Legends race this Saturday, a 7 furlong event pitting some of the world's best retired jockeys against each other.
He has won 6449 races in his career but has not ridden in 10 years.

A super feature on Hawley's preparation, workouts with and without horses, for the big race was shown on THE SCORE's 3 hour racing show put on by Woodbine last night.

POP!
PIZARRO AND WILLIE A. WIN FIRST STAKE

It happens a lot at this time of year - a horse can win a stakes race helped a lot by the fact that the fields are weak or the competition is over the top.

BOLD CORKY, claimed for $12,500 last summer and recently drubbed in the Algoma Yearling sales stakes by more than 9 lengths, won the $125,000 Classy 'n Smart Stakes last night at Woodbine to give jockey TYLER PIZARRO his first stake win as a jockey.
Also, trainer Willie Armata won his first stakes.
The winning owners are All Day Racing and Rainbow Stable.
The result didn't make all that much sense as Bold Corky held on to win by a neck over Nicki Knew.
Both gals have been going all season long and both run Beyer Figures in the 70s.
(Last night's winning Beyer Figure was 77).

Bold Corky, yet another stakes winner for leading sire Bold Executive, was a $9,000 yearling purhcase by Sue Leslie 3 years ago.

Armata has won 4 races with the filly and she has won 3 of 8 this year and over $176,000.

Bold Corky is out of the Secret Claim mare Sweet Corky, who has had 2 other foals. The 2nd dam is the good producing mare Effrayante.

MORE FROM LAST NIGHT

Once THE SCORE show got its volume problem sorted out -just in time for the 2nd race post parade - the crew had to endure steady, light rain that fell most of the night.
(Read more later oin this post about the giant undertaking the Woodbine TV crew will be tackling in California starting this Saturday with Hawley's Living Legends ride and then 7 straight days of Cup stuff)

MIA D'COUGAR won her maiden the last time she raced but caused a lot of interference so last night she put things right with an official win in a maiden allowance at 1 1/16 miles. The D'Wildcat gal was bred by Reade Baker and she is owned by Brenda Goodlet and trainer by Tino Attard.

LA GRAN RUBY was the big favourite in race 2, $25K claiming mares at 1 1/16 miles, and she had a dream trip behind wild running LADYINBLUE - who opened up a huge lead and simply went far too fast in the early stages - and won handily under Eurico Da Silva.
The Compadre 5yo had been blanked in 9 races this year but had been racing over her head. She was 2nd with a big drop to this level last time and made it look easy last night, It was her 7th win in 36 starts and she is clcosing in on $200,000 in earnings.
HJT Racing owns and Norm DeSouza trains.

GRAY JET gave it away in race 3 - as in his pre-race appearance, he looked sharp and happy and he came from well off the pace to win the non-winners of 3 race for $20:for Nick Nosowenko and jockey Tyler Pizarro.
"For a colt he's a lovely horse to be around, he's a barn favourite," said Noswenko on THE SCORE.

CAN B VALID (I Can't Believe) rallied from miles behind a slow pace to win the 4th for $40K. The 4yo was winning for the first time this year for Colebrook Farms and trainer Ashlee Brnjas. Great ride by Eurico Da Silva who just pushed and pushed his mount to the win.

Big favourite KINISHA (Kinshasa) had an unfair start last time when hung up the gate but she showed no ill effects last night as she won her maiden at odds-on by a long margin for York Tech Racing. Laurie Silvera trains and Jim McAleney rode for Emile Ramsammy who was not riding last night.

The first PICK 6 at Woodbine wrapped up with very logical winners KISSEROO AND INCREDIBLE SPIRIT for RMC Stable/Dan Vella and The Very Dry Stable and Tobert Tiller (that team's 2nd win in as many race cards).

$4,000 was bet into the PICK 6, 5 of 6 paid $121.
The carryover is $2K.

CANADIAN REDDAM SPEAKS - THOROUGHBRED DAILY NEWS'

QUESTION: There has been much discussion about the best way for
the Thoroughbred industry to handle the current economic
downturn. What steps do you think are required
to weather the storm?

Owner J. Paul Reddam:

I think we need to look at the fundamentals of running
a business. We get fixated on the little issues, but
miss the big picture. Looking at the overall economy,
we need to realize that markets go up and markets go
down.
Marketing for the sport has
been non-existent. We need a
complete change in the marketing
and take a look at the fundamentals
of wagering. Why be
embarrassed about what your
business is? Our business is
gambling on race horses.
We're struggling to compete
with other sports. When Del Mar
ran this summer, there were no
entries in the Los Angeles
Times, but there was page after
page of stories on steroids. So
what people were seeing wasn't good.
I know people who know I'm in racing, and yet they
don't know Oak Tree is racing right now. If you don't
have handle, you don't have anything. If you want
more owners in the game, you have to figure out how
to push up handle.
When a company is weak and is trying to cut their
budget, they often reduce marketing. But from my
perspective, you have to go the other way and increase
marketing.
