SANDY RIDES AGAIN!

Last Sunday, champion jockey SANDY HAWLEY worked his first horse since he rode in his last race 10 years ago (photo above of Sandy's last mount, Terremoto, from www.booktelevision.com) when he guided Sam-Son Farms' CATCH THE LUCK to a 5 furlong move in 1:00 flat.
Sandy is getting ready for his LIVING LEGENDS ride in a 6 furlong, California-bred dash on Saturday at Santa Anita pitting the Hall of Famer against some of the other retired, world class jocks.
BILL TALLON of the DAILY RACING FORM reports that Sandy also worked EMMA AIN'T BLUFFIN' for trainer Steve Owens yesterday as that gal prepares for this weekend's MAPLE LEAF STAKES.

Others taking part include Chris McCarron, Pat Day, Julie Krone, Jerry Bailey, Jacinto Vasquez, Angel Cordero Jr. and Gary Stevens.
From the Mississauga News..

"There's already been a fair amount of trash-talking," joked Hawley, 59, who won more than 6,000 races and earned nearly $78 million in winnings over his career. He was the leading jockey at Woodbine from 1969-78 and 1988-90.
It's been a decade since Hawley mounted a horse with serious intent and he admits it may be tough.
"We'll see if it's like riding a bicycle," said Hawley, who is just two pounds over his long-time riding weight. "It's going to be a test of the cardiovascular system and the legs."
The former two-time Lou Marsh winner as Canada's top athlete, Hawley won an earlier battle with skin cancer that interrupted his career in the late 1980s.
He won four Queen's Plate races at Woodbine and was Canadian Racing's Man of the year in 1988 when he came home Canada after a decade of racing in California.
Hawley is now a public relations ambassador for the Woodbine Entertainment Group.

$367 winner at La. Downs

By MARY RAMPELLINI
DAILY RACING FORM

Cato paid $367.20 when he won his maiden Sunday in the first race at Louisiana Downs, setting what is believed to be a record win payoff for the Bossier City, La., track. He was sent to post at 182-1 in a $5,000 maiden claiming race, stalked the pace, and was up for a neck win under jockey Pedro Monterrey.

"To the best of our knowledge, this is an all-time record at Louisiana Downs," said Mark Midland, the track's vice president of racing operations since 2006.

Midland said the old record is believed to be a $249 payoff that B.J.'s Spruce returned on June 21, 1996. The last media guide tracking record win payoff information was 2003, and since then officials do not recall a larger payoff, Midland said.

Cato was one of four horses in the 12-horse field that went off at triple-digit odds. Kristens Rebel finished ninth at 125-1; Titan by Day was 11th at 156-1; and Mr. Bradley was 12th at 123-1.

David Wakeland trains Cato for his breeder, Alicia Kyzer. The horse came into Sunday's race off five consecutive double-digit defeats, with his Beyer Speed Figures ranging from 0 to 20.

CURLIN CONFIRMED, WHEW!

Excerpt from Bill Dwyre's columm in the L.A. Times..

Comparing his star horse to athletes such as Magic Johnson and Lance Armstrong, Jess Jackson on Tuesday committed Curlin to run in the $5-million Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita a week from Saturday.

The majority owner of the biggest money-winning horse ever in North America said his decision to go after a second straight Classic title was simple, once he and trainer Steve Asmussen determined Santa Anita's synthetic race surface was safe and competitive.

"I owe it to the horse," Jackson said. "When a top athlete is ready, they want to compete."

The announcement, and the commitment to the $50,000 entry fee that was due at noon Tuesday, came a day after the much-anticipated showdown between Curlin and Big Brown fell apart.

Big Brown's connections said that their horse, star of this year's 3-year-old season with wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, suffered a gash on his right front foot during a workout Monday morning and would not be able to heal in time to take on Curlin.

Big Brown has a $50-million breeding syndication deal that is contractually scheduled to begin Dec. 31, so Big Brown was retired from racing as soon as the severity of his injury was determined.
