Bartenders, servers strike at Woodbine

Racetrack, slots hit by strike of 120 workers

There are no talks scheduled between Canadian Auto Workers and Woodbine Entertainment Group as a legal strike yesterday entered its second week.
Some 120 unionized bartenders and servers at Woodbine Racetrack and Woodbine Slots likely will be facing a leaner Christmas this year, said CAW spokesperson Hemi Mitic.
About 180 Woodbine Entertainment Group employees went on strike Dec. 5 after the union rejected the company's latest offer, citing concerns over wages, benefits and working conditions.
"The company has tabled a list of concessions and seems to be provoking a dispute," Mitic said.
The CAW employees work at Woodbine Racetrack and slots, Mohawk Raceway and slots in Campbellville and Greenwood Teletheatre at Kingston Road and Queen Street East.
Bartenders earn approximately $15 an hour, servers earn somewhat less, Mitic said.
Calls to WEG for comment were not returned Tuesday prior to The Guardian deadline.
This is the first collective agreement between WEG and CAW, Mitic said.
The three affected locations continue to operate during the strike.
Woodbine Entertainment Group reported a revenue decrease of $7.8 million to $345.2 million last year. The corporation reported net assets at year end 2006 of $163.3 million, a 5.8 per cent increase over 2005.
