NASSAU HOT

UPDATE - FRANKIE HAS HIS DERBY

Frankie Dettori, in his 15th attempt, won his first EPSOM DERBY today at Epsom, guiding heavily favoured AUTHORIZED (Montjeu) to victory in the 1 1/2 mile classic. The colt won by 5 emphatic lengths.
Peter Chapple-Hyam trains the colt.
Bookmakers took a bath as 40 million pounds were wagered that Authorized would give Frankie his first Derby win.

Still steamy and hot in T.O. - might be tough on the equines today.

The feature at Woodbine is the Grade 3 NASSAU STAKES, 1 1/16 MILES, turf, that was supposed to mark the return of Horse of the Year ARRAVALE but she popped a splint.
How did the Nassau get its name?

STRADIVINSKY SHARP
101 Beyer

Under virtually a hand ride the entire 6 furlongs, Live Oak's STRADIVINSKY, the Jacques Cartier winner, won the Highlander Stakes prep yesterday in 1:07 4/5, just a tick off the long standing course record set by Wild Zone.
Stradivinsky was odds on and virtually everyone's pick to win the dash over last year's Highlander winner Marco Be Good. Emma-Jayne Wilson rode for trainer Malcolm Pierce.

Notable efforts yesterday - ON THE PODIUM, a stakes placed Bold Executive filly, was offered for just $16,000 yesterday and romped with a 77 Beyer Figure for trainer Laurie Silvera. Top rider Tyler Pizarro was on board.

Pizarro and another apprentice, Michelle Rainford, are in a tough battle for top rider and each won 2 races yesterday.

Dave Cross Jr., trainer of Sunny's Halo and other notables, sent out first-time starter LA BONITA UNO to be the first winner for Adena Springs stallion SLIGO BAY yesterday. The filly, an $18,000 purchase at the Adena 2yo sale, was well prepared and won for Lynne Hindmarsh. The 2nd dam is the fleet Miners Mirage.

Trainers who got off the 'schneid' on the season include Tom Patton Sr. who won with Connie Patton's Ide Be Gone in the 4th race. David Bell, who had western Canadian invader SHAKEY BUSINESS (well bred Capote filly) win the 6th for maiden $50,000 after a 10 month layoff.

TWILIGHT METEOR 'ON SCHEDULE' FOR PLATE

Trainer Todd Pletcher told THOROUGHBLOG yesterday that early Plate favourite TWILIGHT METEOR is 'on schedule' for the June 24 Plate and that he was pleased with his colt's comeback effort off the short layoff recently in a Belmont turf stakes.
"He was a little closer to the pace than he needed to be I thought," said the trainer. "But we needed to get a race into him."
Pletcher said that John Velazquez is the most likely rider for the colt in the Plate. Owner John Fort said there has been interest from Canadian owners to purchase the colt for the Plate but no deal has been done yet.

VELAZQUEZ/GOMEZ tentatively riding Oaks runners

JOHN VELAZQUEZ and GARRET GOMEZ could be aboard Todd Pletcher's fillies for next weekend's Labatt Woodbine Oaks.
Pletcher is sending up Eugene Melnyk's BELLEPLAINE (A.P. Indy) and Velazquez is likely to be her partner. Elisabeth Alexander's CHRISTIE'S TREASURE (Belong to Me) may have Gomez on board.

SATURDAY STUFF

Queen's Plate contenders GHETTO SUPERSTAR and GATOR KING are in the 2nd race today for Stronach Stables. The former just won his maiden and is by Touch Gold - Punchbowl. The latter is a maiden after one race and he is by El Prado.

Two-year-olds fillies are in race 3 - it is an Ontario-sired event at 4 1/2 furlongs. Vinery's AUTHENTICAT, from the first crop of D'Wildcat, could be favoured but give a long look to Woodford Racings' PROMOTION TIME, whose dam Wild Romp was a fast debut winner who could have been a very good one had she not been injured in the Woodbine fire from several years ago.

The NASSAU STAKES, which had its first running in 1956, is race 6. STRIKE SOFTLY (Smart Strike), who zoomed to victory in the Hendrie Stakes, will be favoured. Live Oaks' ELLE RUNAWAY is a strong contender as is the returning MURANI (Distorted Humor).
The Nassau was named for the city in the Bahamas. Why? Because Woodbine's E.P. Taylor had a home there.

Looks like you missed a quick filly in the third race. Tucci Stables own homebred Executrix not only beat Authenticat by two lengths, but also managed to do it with style and set a new track record.

This outfit gets little press since they sold "ONE FOR ROSE", but their precentage of in the MONEY is always tops. They are more than a ONE HIT WONDER.
Kudo's to them and I wish them continued success.
