DATE WITH THE PLATE

DAAHER SEEKS PLATE SURPRISE

Awesome, again?

Darley’s DAAHER, an Ontario-bred AWESOME AGAIN – IRISH CHERRY colt with just 2 races in his career, is scheduled to arrive at Woodbine on Wednesday for next Sunday’s Queen’s Plate.

Trainer KIARAN MCLAUGHLIN said yesterday that the colt, who would have to be supplemented for $25,000 since he was not originally eligible, is “really a nice horse” but that “we know we’re in a little tough”.

Daaher ran a 90 Beyer Figure when he won his maiden.

The colt had a chip taken out of a knee last year which is why he did not race as a juvenile. The colt ducked out at the start of his debut race but is obviously a fast learner.

“I’m not too familiar with the other horses in the race, I know Todd’s horse (Twilight Meteor).”

Oh yes, the colt's sire won the 1997 Plate after just two races - one maiden score and a third. Hmmmmm.

Alan Garcia will ride Daaher.

PLATE IS THE COZ

JIGGS COZ, who figures to be heavily favoured in the Queen’s Plate, had his typical, steady and strong 6 furlong workout yesterday morning on Polytrack. The grey Cozzene colt went in 1:13 4/5 with David Clark up for trainer Sid Attard.

Also on the worktab was HIGH ACT, who was considered a serious Plate contender a couple of months ago but an injury has sidelined the El Prado colt. The Stronach Stables runner worked in 1:03 1/5 for 5 furlongs.

REPLAYS ON HPI.COM SOON

WOODBINE’S betting site HPI.COM will indeed have replays of its races available soon according to the folks at the Toronto track. The re-vamped HPI.com site is set to launch in the coming weeks and replays will be made available.

As for the readers who discussed the music between races – this is something I will attempt to investigate. Air Supply? Eeks.

WOODBINE THURSDAY

Just $1.5 million bet on the Thursday card (perhaps a move towards racing 4 days a week without the Thursday card is in Woodbine’s future?) but some folks had good days.

GREG DE GANNES won a pair with the long striding TWICE A PRINCESS in the 1st race who won for just $10,000 claiming but looked like she was having a fun time doing it.

Clarity Stables’ ARMED AND HAMMERED, the first winner for his sire China Ruckus, won again to remain undefeated, winning an Ontario-sired allowance race for De Gannes et al.

Leading trainer ROBERT TILLER won a pair with YOLIE (Menifee) and METHODTOMYMADNESS (American Chance). The latter was returning from a layoff of one year and won for the 2nd time in his 8 career starts.

Stakes winning ESTEVAN was claimed for a hefty $62,500 by owner/trainer Barb Minshall yesterday. The 6-year-old horse finished 11th in the grass race. Gail Wood-bred ANOTHER ASCOT stalked the pace all the way and won the 1 1/16 mile race for California Stable and trainer Mike DePaulo. The gelding is by Ascot Knight and he went over the $200,000 mark in earnings.

Middle Bay, the gritty little chestnut by With Approval, won his 10th race in his 27th start yesterday ($15,000 claiming) and joined the growing ‘3 wins at the meeting club’.

Young trainer KEVIN ATTARD, who is readying two colts for the Queen’s Plate, added another win in the finale when the flashy chestnut ELEFTHERIA (By the Knob Hill stallion Megas Vukefalos) upset a $19,000 claiming race. The filly was 12th throughout her season debut (“no apparent mishap” was the comment in the chart) for $37,500 with a 35 Beyer Figure but sure was on top of her game yesterday. After the race ATHENAIS lost jockey Justin Stein after the pair were involved in a crowded run to the wire. Apparently neither horse or rider were injured.

*Starting tomorrow on RACING DISPATCH (www.racingdispatch.com), THOROUGHBLOG will provide a Queen’s Plate diary leading up to the June 24 Canadian classic.

Following on from the 'How to attract people to racing' discussion, I lifted this from a forum across the water. It was a Q&A session with a leading writer on horse racing.

Q.- Racing appears to be declining in popularity in many countries. America, Hong Kong and Germany are three very different markets which (I think) have suffered a decline in interest.

You get around a bit, so are there any markets where racing is booming (Japan?) and is there anything we (and other countries) could learn from this?

Thanks for your time on this

A.- I think I've already hinted at what seems to me the basic problem. To enjoy racing properly you have to think about it hard. As attention spans shorten the problem increases. You're right though, the Japanese seem to have conquered it. One reason is that they've somehow succeeded in making racing fashionable and attractive to the young. Yutaka Take, who has (or had) a film star profile has to take plenty of the credit. But one thing they did was very simple. They persuaded young girls to come racing by every means they could think of, including, I think, free entry. The boys naturally followed. One of the most amazing things about race meetings in Japan is the number of young couples you see walking round hand in hand. I don't think it would be that hard to persuade people here or elsewhere that going racing is a 'cool' date.

The Australians are already very good at it. You should see the 'lawn parties' (fenced off from more staid racegoers) they have.
I take the point about the difference between watching and following, and to be honest most of the lawn party set are there to drink and score. But the trick surely is to convince the young that going racing is fun. At least some of them will then surely become real fans.

    Regards,

    Nigel Griffiths.

People!!!!! Let's not make this site a local badger site. Show some professionalism when writing and please stop all this idiotic crap about music at Woodbine or demographics. Who friggin' cares about that crap, and Woodbine anyways? The horsemen like woodbine because it's a cash cow to them. Great purses for Ontario Breds and claimers while the slot revenue continues to keep the sport alive. Believe me, the brass at Woodbine wouldn't know what to do if there were no slots. The sport of Kings would be dead in Toronto, and even with the slots, the brass including Wilmot, are morons. No video??? Do you know why they don't have video yet? Because they've been trying to figure out a way to charge you for it. That's right! All they do is sit back and try to make money for every ancilliary item. It's not enough to them to have takeouts that are so ridiculously high. No sir! They want to make more money. Morons! If it were me I would provide the bettor with all the info he needs to make his bets. The more info provided the more certain the bettor would be of his bet, and the more money he would bet. It's that simple!

Let's use this site to talk about great horses and great horse-racing. Let's talk about good wins and heartbraking losses. Let's talk about poor jockey rides and great ones(Gomez on Hard Spun....Pathetic ride for a top Jock). Let's enjoy the site and make some money betting horses!

I think you're absolutely right there Steve. Make as much information as possible easily accessible to the bettor and they will all, regardless of level, bet more. It has to be free, otherwise it will only be the serious bettor that will use it. They need to encourage the lower level, because they will add to the pool by volume, or move up a level as individuals.

In an ideal world, there should be terminals where a bettor can punch in a horses name and all the information required come up on that horse, breeding, form, stats etc. It would more than cover costs in the long run through betting turnover.

    Quite simple really.

Though their decision was only for final purse awards and not one that affected any mutuel return, the question must be asked?

What's up with the stewards at woodbine? How does shane ellis' horse 95 to 1 shot come down in the 6th?

Ellis' horse came over slightly but was already well clear of Justin Stein's horse who was clearly a beaten favorite.

Another head scratcher of a decision....
