MAKING A MOVE

Okay, font size and style is a bit wacky this morning - pardon the appearance of today's posts.

If you would like to sponsor THOROUGHBLOG - put a little ad for your service or your farm, etc. on the site, send a request through dolphin12@rogers.com.

Breeders are invited to advertise their farms or stallions. Speaking of breeders, how big is the news from the CTHS yesterday about Breeders' Awards for horses winning graded stakes elsewhere? (See release below)

AND FURTHERMORE….

I don’t like red-boarding – sometimes it is just necessary, however. (Red-boarding – i.e. explaining why a horse was easy to like or bet on in a race the day after).

How in the world FURTHERMORE was let go at 35 to 1 in that weak allowance race on turf with just 6 horses in it last night at WOODBINE is not easy to understand.

Yes, the 8-year-old horse with just 19 races to his credit, had won once – a zillion years ago.

But his Beyer Figures in the low 60’s on Polytrack put him in range of most of the others and most importantly, he was the best bred for turf in the field.

The War Deputy gelding is out of 3 time grass winner DAISY DOOLITTLE and a ½ brother to 2 grass winners.

Owned by Grey Samulak and trained by Julia Samulak. FURTHERMORE was ridden by Steve Bahen, who earlier in the day, enjoyed the festivities with the media at the QUEEN’S PLATE GOLF TOURNAMENT.

Furthermore raced 1 1/16 miles in 1:40 4/5, not far off the course record.

Speaking of records – okay, well, we’re just surmising here, MARK CASSE won his 4th consecutive stakes race (that’s quite a feat) when LEGAL MOVE, making his first start as a 3yo, worked hard to edge Catsimile and essentially the rest of the field to win the BOLD RUCKUS STAKES at 6 furlongs on the turf for Ontario-sired runners.

It was a wild finish of the Bold Ruckus as all but one in the 9 horse field was in the photo – yes – an 8 horse photo as the winner scored by 3 /4 of a length and the rest were noses and necks apart.

LEGAL MOVE, bred by Gardiner Farms and a son of Bold Executive – Charity Country, Country Store, won two stakes last year (one with an 80 Beyer Figure) and sped the distance yesterday in 1:08 3/5 – an 80 Beyer.

It was yet another stakes win for WOODFORD RACING LLC and jockey Pat Husbands too.

PRINCE ATLANTIS joined the triple winners club for 2007 with another sweeping move to victory last night at WOODBINE. The stormy Atlantic colt won his maiden for $40,000 in April and he won a 3yo allowance race last night. He is owned by Sjb Stable Trust and trained by Norm McKnight.

And, he’s surely seen better days when he was racing in graded stakes, but FOREVER RUSH won big last time for just $9,500 claiming, was not claimed, and went over $300,000 in earnings for Kelynack Racing Stable. The Wild Rush gelding was winning for the 7th time in his 22nd start. He ran an 81 Beyer Figure last night.

LEGAL MOVE release from WOODBINE
TORONTO, June 13 - Legal Move returned from a six-month absence with a
stakes record performance in Wednesday's $125,000 Bold Ruckus Stakes at
Woodbine.

The three-year-old son of Bold Executive, himself a son of Bold Ruckus,
traveled six furlongs on the E.P. Taylor turf course in 1:08.79, which
is 0.10 seconds faster than Flashy Dr. Don's time in 2000.

The Bold Ruckus was Legal Move's third career stakes victory and
continued the lucrative streak being enjoyed by trainer Mark Casse and
jockey Patrick Husbands, who have now won the last four stakes
contested
at the Toronto oval.

"It's scary," said Casse. "It's one of those times when everything
comes together. The horses are doing quite well. It was a slow year
starting off."

Finishing second in the turf event, which was restricted to
Ontario-sired three-year-olds, was Catsimile, while Fudgethebottomline
won a tight photo for third.

For Legal Move, the victory is his third from eight career starts,
elevating his career earnings to $294,350. Last year, he won last
year's
Simcoe and Bull Page Stakes. He was also second in the Frost King and
third in the Kingarvie.

The bay colt settled just off the :23.18 and :45.49 fractions of
first-time starter Herb Is Home. Turning for home, Legal Move and
Catsimile pounced on the front-runner and dueled for the advantage.
Inside the final furlong, Legal Move edged away for the three-quarter
length tally.

Casse, last year's Sovereign Award winner as Canada's Outstanding
Trainer, said the Woodford Racing charge was fit enough for six
furlongs
on the turf.

"I like three quarters on the turf," said the 46-year-old conditioner.
"It equates with about five-eighths on the Poly. I felt comfortable he
was ready for that. He had surgery over the winter. He was a little
behind everybody. He's a talented horse."

Woodford Racing is a relatively new syndicate which was put together by
William Farish, Jr.

"If it wasn't for Bill (Farish, Jr.) I sure wouldn't be here," said
Casse. "I owe all of this to him. He let me go out and buy some horses
and that's what you're seeing running for the most part."

Legal Move returned $5.60, $4 and $3.20, combining with Catsimile
($8.30 and $5.30) for a $49.20 exactor. Fudgethebottomline ($6.30)
completed a triactor worth $270.60.

Further Rewards Forthcoming For Ontario Breeders

Rexdale, ON - June 12, 2007 - Well known for their lucrative Breeders Awards program worth over $2.9 million, the CTHS (Ontario Division) has taken this program one step further by rewarding breeders of Ontario-breds who excel outside of the province. In recognition of these highly talented horses, Breeders Awards will now be distributed to North American Graded Stakes outside of Ontario, within Canada and the United States.

"It's very exciting for us to be able finally to distribute awards to Ontario breeders that have not only had such great success within Ontario, but outside the province as well," said Julie Coulter, General Manager of the Ontario CTHS.

This year alone, successful Ontario-breds have included notables such as Jambalaya who captured both the Gulfstream Breeders' Cup (G1) and the Bulleit Bourbon Pan American Handicap (G3) in Florida; and Sky Conqueror who took the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs in Kentucky. Other notables include Sealy Hill who won the Bourbonette Breeders' Cup (G3) at Turfway Park in Kentucky; Indian Vale who took the Next Move Handicap (G3) at the Aqueduct in New York; and Street Sounds who scored a (G2) victory in the Stonerside Beaumont Stakes at Keeneland. And the list of Ontario-bred racing accomplishments just keeps growing.

Budgeted at $100,000 through the Ontario Thoroughbred Improvement Program (TIP), awards will be issued to the breeders of Grade 1 through Grade 3 Stakes out-of-province winners at the same levels as are paid to Graded Stakes at both Woodbine and Fort Erie Racetracks. Breeders Awards for place and show horses at these levels will be issued should budgeted funds be available. All awards issued will be pro rated, with no award distribution less than $1,000. As these awards are considered Breeders Awards, they will be included in the tabulation of the cap of $75,000 to any individual breeder.

Breeders Awards are just one component of the Ontario TIP program, which has been designed to support Thoroughbred breeders in Ontario in the form of awards, bonuses and purse money worth $9.3 million. For further information, please contact the CTHS at (416) 675-3602 for visit www.cthsont.com.

The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Ontario Division) is a non-profit organization representing breeders within Ontario by promoting Canadian-Bred/Ontario-Foaled Thoroughbreds, both nationally and around the world.

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

Many questions from readers in the last day or so..

LEONNATUS ANTEAS apparently suffered from heat exhaustion after his big workout yesterday – yes it is possible it was that warm, it was already 22 C (about 76 F) in the morning and the air quality in Toronto this week has been poor. The racetrack, being in a high air traffic area beside a highway, all that much sticky and gooey air-wise. No doubt working that fast contributed too his wobbly nature after the prep.

One reader asked if I have owned horses – yes. I was involved in the claiming game for many years and owned pieces of half a dozen horses (one at a time). Among my trainers were George Bankuti and Debbie England. Four years ago I purchased a yearling in partnership with some friends but the big grey gelding never made the races and I sold my share last year. Tough game, no question.

Will ask other readers to try and reply as to why old-timer LAKEFIELD was scratched from the last race last night…

OTHER STUFF

Queen’s Plate hopeful INCLUDE US worked in 1:01 1 /5 yesterday on Polytrack at Woodbine. The Include colt is a maiden..Stakes winner TOTHEMOONANDBACK is back and worked 5 furlongs at Woodbine yesterday in 1:01…

How sad that one-time leading rider GRETA KUNTZWEILER was sentenced to 10 years in prison for methamphetamine production and trafficking in the home she shared with Bryan Beccia, the exercise rider for Monarchos…SAND SLIDER, an Ontario bred by Wild Zone- Worldly Gal, won an allowance race at Suffolk Downs yesterday, The 6yo horse has won 5 of 22 starts and has been competing in mid to low level claiming races for much of his career.

SELLING RACING

Would love to help sell racing back to the media, the mainstream media. Seeing a large number of local media at a golf tournament yesterday gets one pondering - how?

Dan Liebman of THE BLOOD HORSE has some interesting thoughts on selling racing back to the mainstream media…

War Deputy might be a "new" turf sire to keep an eye on. It was good to see a small outfit win a big purse with an 8 year old!

Steve Bahen shows a genuine affection for his horses. Everytime I see him during the post parade, he's always giving the horse a pat--Furthermore being no exception.

Jennifer, do you know how Markdale is doing? I know he hit the gate during the Plate Trial, and was subsequently pulled up.

    Thanks

Hi Jen! Really enjoy reading your blog.

Just a couple comments I wanted to make regarding Woodbine and was wondering if you could help.

The first being the replays of the races. I find it so frustrating that Woodbine seems to be the only major track that the race replays are not available on the internet. I subscribed to a site called race replays.com and they had the replays of all the major tracks at your convenience. All except Woodbine. It's ridiculous that in this day and age Woodbine cannot make this service available for the cutomers. I know the replays are on HPItv at 6:15am in the mornings but come on, that isn't a very practical time. Can you bring this to the attention of Woodbine Management and make them aware that providing the replays on the web would be very helpful to players and beneficial for the racetrack overall. I would be more willing to bet money on race if I could view the previous races of the horses entered.

Also while sitting in the stands this year I noticed there is Music playing on the PA system between races. I think this is a good idea however, the music that is being played is the lamest elevator music I ever heard. How about playing some better music like chart toppers right now or at least soemthing from this decade. Some of the selections I've heard being played are some dreadful "Air Supply" songs and one time I actually heard the theme song from the "Young and the Restless" soap opera. I mean what is with that? This kind of goes back to what a poster was commenting on a couple of weeks ago about entertainment between races. I don't think they have to go to the extreme but play some better music for crying out loud. Thanks Jen.

Above posts re: music and replays make sense. Hoever lets take it a bit further. How about NO music (unnecessary noise) and how about replays AND Trakus information on WEG's website. Surely that's not asking a lot. WEG executives continue to preach about customer satisfaction, but talk is cheap, so hope WEG will do something progressive for the bettors. If not maybe those executives should find other jobs, like at the ORC. Thats where total lethary prevails.

  • At 11:20 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

umm...the reason they play lame elevator music and not chart toppers of today is because no one under 40 even goes to the track. the average horseplayer can't relate to today's music.

  • At 11:24 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I have always found it funny how many media members i hear mention the annual WEG golf tourney. All seem to really enjoy it.

however, why is it these freeloaders will play golf on WEG's dime, yet never cover anything about the game....how does that work?

  • At 11:57 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Right on Anon 11:20. Under 40's cannot be found at the track. Now WEG management thinks that showing the idiotic Trakus "chiclets" wiil attract video game players. What utter nonsense. The "chiclets" detract from close-up camera coverage of the race. Compare camera coverage from the last Keeneland meet, (which has the chiclets in a different format), to WEG's coverage. WEG stinks!!

Memo to WEG: emulate Keeneland coverage and provide Trakus data or terminate your Trakus experiment!!

  • At 12:13 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

What utter nonsense! I stood in line at the mutuels last weekend and most of the fans waiting to cash or bet were under 30.

  • At 12:19 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

There are lots of under 40 people at the track. I dont really care for music, entertainment between races, thats when I go to the paddock, and study. I also kind of like the chiclets at the bottom. It lets me know where my horse is in the race since I can barely make out the horses from the stands. For the person asking about replays, www.calracing.com has replays. You will have to sign up for free. The only problem is it wont let you choose woodbine, but when you search by horse, you will be able to pull woodbine races. It would be better if woodbine site had then replays.

  • At 1:15 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Oh yes, my mistake, lots of people under 40. And 99% of them were cashing $2 tickets.

  • At 1:46 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Anon 11:57....I'm at the racetrack right this minute with my laptop sitting in the grandstand and I'm looking at a MOSTLY under 40 crowd right now sitting in the sun watching the races!
And as fars the "chicklets" detracting from close up shots of the race - I did a comparison earlier this year with a race from last year before they had the chicklets and a race from this year with them and they have not changed their framing size one bit for the wider and closer pans shots. The chicklets are simply filling all of the empty space that used to sit below the bottom shot of the horses running. Do the test yourself - you'll see the framing is exactly the same.
I've been coming to this track for a long long time and came with some "newbies" earlier this year and the only way they could've found their horse amongst the 14 horse field was to look up that chicklets - find it instantly and then follow along. How is that a negative?
I don't need to see them with my experience of following the races - but they don't interfere with my race viewing because I just ignore them. Instead of bashing them why not just ignore them?
Any chance to bash them instead of constructive criticism seems to be the point trying to be made... .

Are you people at the same track as everybody else??? There's lot's of people under 30 there. I would even go so far as to say there are many teens there. Sure you won't see them if your standing in front of the Simulcast TV's all day. But if you go into the stands there are casual fans who are there to watch Woodbine and spend sometime in the sun with friends. It should be Woodbines intention to try and convert these people into lifelong followers of the sport. Who do you think is going to carry the sport into the next decades once all the oldtimers are gone?

  • At 3:17 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

MD thanks for that tip I will check out the calracing.com site but as you said WEG should really have this available on their website.

  • At 3:58 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Better than throwing tickets into the garbage! I was just commenting on the comment made that there are no people under 40 at the track. Not how much they bet. I am one of them, and I dont bet $2 :) About pre-race entertainment, I cant really think of much? Maybe a live band playing in between races?

  • At 6:12 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    Anon 1:46

To be fair, the person who commented on the "chicklets" was not bashing anyone or anything. He/she was just adding his/her opinion.

A lot of people agree that Woodbine should go with the one simple line of #'s across the bottom, like Keeneland or even Hong Kong does it. Dumbing the racing product down for the newbies (most of who I would assume are watching teh races live anyway) is not everyones opinion of a good thing for the game. I can see it turning off as many people as it attrcats.

are you paid by Woodbine? You sure seem to take criticism of the place really seriously..

not everyone thinks Woodbine is perfect....don't take it so pesonally.

I love it, you fellas should post your age after your post so we can tell who are old bastards and those that want to try and attract new people to the game that will stay. 2 weeks ago I was down in Ky for a wedding and decided to head over to Churchill on Sunday and try to claim a horse to bring up to Woodbine to clean up, I got outshook, but to my surprise there was music playing at of all places Churchill Downs (and the tunes were a decent mix of classic rock and new stuff), whaaaa?, yes they have joined the real world and realised that tracks have to make an effort to get people to come out to the track and then get them to return. There are young people that go to the track, they just don't like getting the evil eye from old goats that feel they won the track because they bet 5 accross every race since 1950.

Woodbine isn't perfect but its damn near close to perfect.

  • At 9:26 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Who knew...the answer to the question: How do we get new people out to the track.

    MUSIC!!!

what have these tracks been thinking for the last 100 years?

I can see the line-ups waiting to get into Woodbine now. All the while chanting.....AIR SUPPLY....AIR SUPPLY!!!

between this and the "chicklets" they won't be able to print enough programs....Damn you on-line poker....you're going down. WOODBINE has music!!

*hums the tune of the Y&R* while racing out to buy a form before the masses gobble them all up.

I can see both sides of this Trakus debate. Personally, i think it's like any other new technology, it takes a bit of playing around with before it can be perfected and the majority will be happy with it. There is definetly a lot of potential for this technology, no doubt, and WEG probably hasn't even scratched the surface of it.

as for the "chicklets" i totally get that it can be helpful at the track. I, however, watch the races the majority of the time on HPITV. Between HPITV'S tickers, the "chicklet" and the info at the top of the screen i find it very cluttered. This might not be the case for everyone, i freely admit that, but i also don't think i am the only one with this complaint.

Having watched, Keeneland, Hong Kong, WEG harness racing and now Harrington Harness Racing, I find that the 1 line across the bottom works best on T.V.

I just hope that with time, WEG will be able to find a happy medium between it's "in house" broadcast and it's "over the air" broadcast.

not trying to slam or bitch about anyone, just throwing in my 2 cents.

With regard to Anon 9:25, I don't believe that anybody has suggested that music is the answer to all of the questions, it's just one aspect that may help. Racing needs to encourage young people to the sport, as they are the future.

Society and its demands change and WEG have to change with it. It's very easy to criticize, coming up and implementing sucessful ideas is far more difficult. I'm sure they will try various things, some will work some will fail dismally, but the important thing is always to try.

The Japanese tried something and it worked, racing in the UK/Ireland is also quite strong, so it can work.

To many, horse racing = betting = stigma and young people (and older) have to be shown that there is more to the sport than that. Get them here by any means available first and work on that after.

This sport has all the qualities required for an exciting and stimulating day out for all ages, it just needs some serious marketing to force the point home.

I would agree with you Anon 10:30, there could be improvements on HPiTV with regard to its display. It's almost as though there's not enough room for the actual racing. The 'chicklets' are a great idea in my view, it just needs a little fine tuning. I find the camera work poor here, so the 'chiclets' are quite helpful. TurfTrax in the UK ran something similar on Channel4 racing coverage and they showed the leading horses actual speed as well which was useful.

Lots of work to be done, hopefully constructive ideas to be tried and many lessons to be learned.

    Regards,

    Nigel Griffiths.
