ZARKAVA 2 to 1 for ARC
One who chased her last weekend could come to Woodbine

If you have not been paying attention to overseas news and racing, you would not know that the unbeaten freak-filly ZARAKAVA (Zamindar) is the 2 to fave for the Preix de l'Arc de Triomphe next month at Longchamp.

The filly just won the Group 1 PRIX VERMEILLE at Longchamp on the weekend with a wild turn of foot after breaking slowly.
The video is below.

As the big Breeders' Cup CHALLENGE day at Woodbine on Oct. 4 looms, we have our fingers crosed that some big names from Europe will be in town.

Trainer JOHN GOSDEN said that DAR RE MI, 2nd to ZARKAVA in the Prix Vermeille, could race in the Canadian International while MICHITA, who was unplaced, could come for the E.P. TAYLOR.

CANADIANS START TO THINK ABOUT BREEDERS' CUP

There is a definite chill in the morning air these days, the fall season is here and that means the championship races are on the horizon.

Thanks to a watered down BREEDERS' CUP, where so many more divisions have been added to make it a 2 day event, Canadian horses and horsepeople have more opportunities to race for big money on the day that showcases the best of the breed.

It seems like forever-ago since there were just the 7 big races on Cup day when it started 24 years ago.

So who are the possibilities that could represent Woodbine when the Cup takes place on October 24 and 25 at Santa Anita over a synthetic dirt or the 2-turn turf course?

As mentioned yesterday, American-bred and owned youngsters SOUTHERN EXCHANGE and C KARMA could be in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies Turf for trainer Greg de Gannes, who is Woodbine based.

RAHY'S ATTORNEY would need to put up a pile of cash to compete in the MILE but his 107 Beyer Figure looks quite okay compared to those that he could face.

The BEAR STABLES of DANNY DION of Alberta could go with BEAR NOW and FATAL BULLET, both American breds eyeing the Distaff and Sprint for trainer Reade Baker.

What about MARLANG, the Saranac and Breeders' Stakes winner? The big bay, should he compete in the Canadian International and fare well, could certainly head to to California.

And there are still races such as the SUMMER and NEARCTIC and E.P. TAYLOR to come that could certainly give the circuit more Cup starters.

LIKE WOODBINE, LIKE KEENELAND

EXCERPT FROM THOROUGHBRED TIMES TODAY

Kentucky jockeys to test new whips at Keeneland

by Frank Angst

As Kentucky Thoroughbred racing moves toward adopting new whip rules, jockeys in the state will have the opportunity to try some of the proposed whips during the Keeneland Race Course fall meeting.

Rogers Beasley, Keeneland’s director of racing, said the Lexington track would purchase 30 or 40 of the whips that meet expected new standards. Every rider in two races each day will use the whips.

Beasley presented the plan at a meeting of the Safety and Welfare Committee of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on Monday in Lexington. The committee decided to not make a recommendation on whip regulations to the KHRC at its September 22 meeting as it waits for some final details in shaping regulation.

Committee members chose to wait for feedback from riders at Keeneland and see what recommendations are made by the Association of Racing Commissioners International. In August, the RCI board voted in favor of new regulations for whips and formed a subcommittee to fine tune proposed language in a model rule. That model rule could be adopted in October. Also, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association plans to survey fans on whip use.

While every detail has not been finalized, the Safety and Welfare Committee appears committed to requiring more padding on whips, a longer popper, shortened length of whips, and decreased weight of whips.

“This will be a lot more benign on the horses,” retired jockey Chris McCarron said of the new whips.

Beasley said the new whips would be used in races early on the card and will not be used in stakes races. He said the track will collect information from riders and Keeneland will turn that information over to the Safety and Welfare Committee.

RUDY IS RETIRED!

The TOP BUNK LIST UPDATE, from ALEX BROWN

Rudirudy is the latest Top Bunk retiree.

Rudirudy, an earner of over $700,000 from more than 100 starts, has been retired from racing through the efforts of Fans of Barbaro and the Top Bunk List project http://alexbrownracing.com/wiki/index.php/Top_Bunk_List.

Thirteen year old Rudirudy was a former stakes winner whose career spanned nine years. Lately he had been running in cheap claiming races and in his last race he finished last.

Rudirudy is at the Unicorn Center (http://theunicorncenter.com/index.php) and will be rehabbed for a second career.

Rudirudy is the third "Top Bunk" listed horse who has been retired through the efforts of Fans of Barbaro.

This list is named after Top Bunk, who was retired after earning more than $500,000 and running in early 2008 in lowly claiming races.

Top Bunk inspired the project, Ask the Lord, an earner of more than $700,000 and Lights on Broadway, who was Texas Champion in 2001, are other retirees.

Ask the Lord and Lights on Broadway are currently being rehabbed for pony work.

Canadian-bred SKY DIAMOND was on the TOP BUNK LIST this summer but broke down in a race at MONMOUTH PARK and was euthanized.
