Win takes Husbands to top
Published on: 10/10/07.

TORONTO – Patrick Husbands narrowly grabbed sole leadership of the intense Woodbine jockeys' championship race on Monday when he scored a victory on the ten-race card.
Chasing his fourth Woodbine title, Husbands landed the third race to boost his tally for the season to 99, one ahead of his main rival Tyler Pizarro, who went winless.
Reigning champion Emma-Jayne Wilson also failed to ride a winner and remained third on 94 wins, while fourth-placed Trinidadian Emile Ramsammy climbed to 92 with a victory in the eighth race. There are two months remaining in the season.
Starting the day level at the top of the table – on 98 wins – with Pizarro, Husbands was unplaced in his first two rides – in the first and second races – on the card, but struck in Race 3, a CAN$68 000 (BDS$125 000) event over a-mile-and-sixteenth.
Astride the 2-to-1 favourite East End Tap, Husbands produced one of his now familiar perfectly timed come-from-behind finishes. He positioned the two-year-old colt near the back of the field for the first half of the race.
He gained steadily leaving the far turn and rushed forward down the homestretch to snatch victory by a neck in one minute, 49.14 seconds, edging the 38-1 outsider Bag Of Hammers – with Barbadian jockey Slade Callaghan at the finish.
Ramsammy, Woodbine's champion in 1996 and 1997, was also brilliant in a come-from-behind triumph as he won the CAN$63 600 (BDS$115 000) eighth race over six furlongs with the 3-1 second favourite Fudgethebottomline, for Jamaican trainer Laurie Silvera.
Leaving the half-mile in sixth position, Ramsammy hustled the three-year-old gelding to challenge the front-runners approaching the final turn and got up in time to win by a neck.
