MORE SIZZLE

WOODBINE WEDNESDAY NIGHT

'MAC' ON TRACK

For followers of Woodbine racing, top jockey Jim McAleney gets his belated start to 2007 after a tough injury in the spring in which his leg was broken. He rides 2 for his regular client Reade Baker tonight.

Ontario-sired fillies are the feature tonight at Woodbine. Race 6 is for non-winners of 3 and stakes winner MOON PATH is the favourite for Sam-Son farms. The $126,090 (US) yearling purchase has not made that money back yet from six starts but is getting close. The daughter of Perigee Moon won her last outing on June 30 with a 64 Beyer Figure.

More interesting are the grass races – race 2 is at 1 3/8 miles for $50,000 claimers and SEXTET, by Singspiel, drops from stakes races into the cozy spot.

Race 3 is an allowance/optional claimer at 7 furlongs on turf and 11-year-old FRANK’S SELECTION is seeking his 14th career win and first since last August. The Mi Selecto gelding was just 3rd in that sizzling fast race won by Leonnatus Anteas.

FORT ERIE FUTURE DISCUSSED TODAY

There is reportedly a meeting in Fort Erie today between the city, the track folks, the HBPA and the Ontario Lottery Corporation to discuss the future if the border oval.

The track has been battling several casinos in the area and soon will be up against Presque Isle Downs racetrack which opens next month in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Noon works

WAKE AT NOON scorched four furlongs in 47 1/5 at Fort Erie yesterday and is apparently headed to Saratoga to race. The Horse of the Year from several years ago has been at stud for a few years and has attempted several comebacks. He was ineffective in a few starts last year. He is owned by Bruno Schickedanz and trainer Mark Fournier.

Sky too

At Woodbine, champion SKY CONQUEROR worked half a mile in 50 3/5 on the Polytrack and he is apparently headed to the Nijinsky Stakes on Aug. 26.

KOWBOY AT SARATOGA

Eligible for champion 2yo in Canada

KODIAK KOWBOY, essentially the leader for the 2yo colt Sovereign Award in Canada, goes for his 3rd straight stakes win in today’s Saratoga Special, Grade 2 at Saratoga.

The son of Posse won the Victoria Stakes in June at Woodbine and had previously debuted in a 2 furlong race. His 2 starts in Canada make his eligible for the Sovereign Award.

SCHICKEDANZ BREEDER OF THE WEEK

Jambalaya is still in the headlines today as GUS SCHICKEDANZ is the Thoroughbred Daily News Breeder of the Week, sent out by Thoroughbred Times. Schickedanz bred Jambalaya, a son of the owner’s stallion Langfuhr and the Vice Regent mare Muskrat Suzie. Schickedanz, 78, owns an immaculate farm in Schomberg, Ontario.

He sold Jambalaya as a yearling and Muskrat Suzie in 2002.

OTHER STUFF

MAREN’S MEADOW, a 2yo filly bred by Josham Farms in Ontario, won her maiden at Delaware Park yesterday in her 2nd career start. The Meadowlake filly is out of Gold Liaka, by Yukon and is a half-sister to stakes winning fillies Golden Path and Chamul. She was a $25,000 Keeneland September yearling.
